Building AI-Powered Databases to Overcome Outdated Practices and Advance Human-Based Research.
Doctors Against Animal Experiments (DAAE), an NGO based in Cologne, advocates for a phase-out of animal experiments and a shift towards ethical, human-based research. Alongside public outreach, campaigns, and political advocacy, DAAE develops and maintains four databases designed to accelerate this transition and make Non-Animal Technologies (NATs) more accessible, transparent, and usable.
Two of these projects — the NATworks Database and the TTV Database (Transparente Tierversuche) — integrate AI-based approaches to process, structure, and provide access to scientific and political information as well as court rulings.
In this talk, Julia Radzwill, biologist and Scientific Officer at DAAE, will introduce the databases, the problems they were built to address, and how they can be used to challenge the status quo in animal-based research. Robert Wulff, IT Administrator and developer of the databases, will then take a look under the hood, providing technical insights into their architecture, implementation, and the role AI plays in turning complex domain specific data into accessible information.
